“Good deal, would go again”
“We chartered Mixed Bag II and did some inshore fishing with Jaime as our guide. We were very happy with our guide and hooked up with a nice snook and ‘cuda. Guide was on time with bait ready and a plan. Our girls came along for the ride and had a very nice time. With fuel, ice, beer, sodas, etc included in the price, I think this was a nice deal and I would recommend Mixed Bag charters. Tim W – Seymour”
“Mixed Bag shines again – A great crew and results too”
“Used these guys last year and we were very impressed. This year we did some off shore fishing but did not hook up. Captain Rob more than made up for it on the way in with some non-stop action landing several beautiful Black Fin Tuna and landing and releasing a 7+ ft. Bull shark after a forty-five minute battle. Mixed in was a Caribbean Reef Shark, 2 Cudas, one Jack. and several unknown fish (break offs). Mate was professional and accommodating. If you are on St. John or St. Thomas, call these folks for a reasonably priced charter with results to boot. Larry O – Weare, NH “
“Fabulous Trip-Grouper Catch!”
“We a group of 4 from Minnesota, had a wonderful time! We caught several nice fish, but the highlight of the day was the HUGH Grouper my husband caught! It was 76 inches long and 200+ Grouper!!!! So fun to see him pulled in, gave my husband quite a workout.
We would highly recommend Capt. Rob and Matt, they were wonderful hosts, very friendly and helpful, can’t say enough good about them and their boat.”
Great time, well worth the cost a must if you visit St. Thomas or St. John’s – Connie S – Oakdale
“MIXED BAG – A Class Act that Brings home the fish and gives an experience that keeps you REELING”
“We went out on the Mixed Bag Luhrs 40 and we had a ball! Susan caught a trophy King Mackerel and I caught a 7 Foot Shark. Lots of other fish too. These guys are all A1 class professional and they know the territory and how to move the boats. DEFINITELY if we go back to ST John they are on our itinerary. They gave us a lifetime memory of a lifetime. All the guys are professionals and know their stuff and are hungry for fish and CUSTOMER DELIGHT! Worth every dollar! Monster crew and fun. – Tim I – Bettendorf, Iowa
“Fishing for real”
“We decided to take an afternoon fishing charter with mixed bag and were really happy we did so. I’ve chartered boats before in Ft Lauderdale and Miami, so I figured it would be really similar to that but it could not have been more different. Our captain was more than professional and didn’t look like the typical hung-over fishing guys you see on many charter boats. He answered all our questions, no matter how dumb they might have been. The fishing was fantastic, something I have never before experienced on a charter boat. We caught several big wahoos, kingfish, barracudas and even a sailfish which will be the centerpiece of our living room once the taxidermist is done. What a great way to spend some time in beautiful St. John. James M – Jamaica, New York”
“Scratch that off the bucket list!!!!!”
“I’ve always enjoyed fishing. From back when I was a boy and my grandfather would take me to the local pond I’ve been “hooked”. As much as I love fishing I’ve never had a chance to tackle a large saltwater fish. As much as a I’ve always wanted I’ve just never found the time or circumstance. So when i was lucky enough to go to St John on vacation with my wife I simply could not resist the temptation. I booked Mixed Bag through our hotel concierge at the Westin and was picked up right at the hotel’s dock. I didn’t really know what to expect, but the captain put me on some incredible fishing minutes from leaving the dock! We caught several large wahoos, a large stripped predator id never even heard of, got a big dolphin fish which jumped all over the ocean some huge barracudas, king mackerels and was even lucky enough to catch a big old tarpon as icing on the cake!!! The action was non stop!!!!! Thank you mixed bag!!!!” – Ron H – French Lick, Indiana
“Fishing with Mixed Bag? Totally worth it!!!!”
“As a bit of a girly girl I was apprehensive at first to go fishing, but my dad and brother talked me into it and what a great decision it was!!! We were on a comfortable open boat with a super friendly and knowledgeable captain fishing the beautiful waters off of St John catching all kinds of awesome fish!!!! The highlight of the 4 hour trip was my brother Dean’s BIG SHARK!!!! WOW!!!!!! we also caught wahoo, kingfish , barracuda and big snappers. The action was constant!! Don’t miss out on this if your in St John!!!!!” – Meghan M – Garden City, New York
“These guys are unreel! lol extremely knowledgeable, personable, and friendly. We caught a great assortment of fish on a half day trip and I even got my beautiful trophy barracuda mounted!!!!! You should not miss this great experience!!!!”
Malcolm Y – Miami Beach, Florida
“All Day Blue Marlin Trip”
“Capt Rob and Mate Chad were experienced on well equipped 40 ft 2000 Luhrs convertible boat. We went 3 for 6 on Blue Marlin. The boat had a head, live well, and did a 20 mile run to the North Drop. Having fished around the world would definitely recommend Mixed Bag if your looking for a first rate day trip.” – Traveling_Beee – Atlanta
“Experience of a lifetime/Heading back for more”
I’ve fished around the world on vacation. Captain Rob and crew are 1st rate. I’ve fished on this boat on several different trips to St John and can’t wait for my next trip in late September 2013. Whether it’s live lining live bait for Blackfin Tuna, Wahoo, Rainbows or Mahi or hunting the elusive Blue Marlin these guys do it better than most. I’ve caught them all on this boat. This is serious blue water fishing only miles from a fantastic resort. That being said, be flexible, be prepared and let them know what your intentions are and the Captain and crew will make it happen. If your serious about this kind of fishing and want to add it to a visit a world class resort then Mixed Bag is it! Seasons mean everything in this industry so do yourself a favor and read up on what’s biting at the time of your visit in your favorite fishing magazine. If you were heading to Lake Tahoe in July, you certainly don’t expect fresh powder for skiing do you? I bagged 2 450lb+ Blue’s the last trip, can’t wait for this one! – Chris S – Redondo Beach, California
“I fished for blue marlin in Ocean City Maryland for 20 years and never caught one…then I fished with Robbie Richards”
After fishing for blue marlin for 20 years and not connecting I was disenchanted to say the least. Then my good friend and fishing partner Burke invited me to go with him to St John to chase the blue ones. That was ten years ago. To date we have fished with Robbie over 25 times. The experience was so unbelievable that I had to pinch myself to make sure I was not dreaming. We raised an astonishing 20 blue marlin a day .Over the years we have caught and released about 20 blue marlin my largest being over 400 pounds. This captain is intense, knowledgeable, persistent along with fact he has boat handling skills that cannot be excelled. I have fished with three different mates on the ‘Mixed Bag’ they were all top notch. Robbie has a great disposition and a good sense of humor until the mate starts setting out the spread then he goes into fish mode. He is all business watching the spread, teasers, sounder, and current. Nothing slips past his watch full gaze. Robbie reminds me of a bird of prey on his perch waiting to strike. All in all my experiences on the ‘Mixed Bag’ have been many of success and demonstration of great fishing skills. I can never thank him enough. I will continue to return and fish with him as long as I live. – Jack
“Mixed Bag II – Captain Cliff rules”
Excellent day out fishing – we did the 3/4 day and did offshore. We caught Tuna, Rainbow Runner and Snapper. Captain Cliff really knew his stuff. I’ve never seen a guy change hooks so quickly. Pretty pricey but highly recommended if you want a real pro who’s super fast and knowledgeable. Boat ride out to offshore was so fun! – soulbyte – Tuxedo Park, New York
“A great crew and results too – Mixed Bag shines again”
“Picked up at the Westin Resort dock, we had lines in the water within 15 minutes. Captain Rob had us into a school of dolphin five minutes later. Three on and landed all three-dinner in the bank. Live lined with spinning gear and caught a very nice Wahoo, 2 yellow tail, a black fin tuna, 3 barracuda, ai trigger fish, 2 horse eye and one king mackerel. This vessel well named. Highly recommended. Oh, and this one is for the ladies: Wait till you see the mate without a shirt. ” – Larry O – Weare, NH
“Best Day on the Water”
“Our family went fishing one day during our stay on St. John. They were able to pick us up at the Westin where we were staying. The captain was terrific but it was the mate Adam that made our day. He was GREAT with the kids and so knowledgeable. It was my husband who wanted to go fishing I didn’t have that much interest in it but it actually turned into the most memorable day of our vacation. If you go to the Virgin Islands you must go out for a day with mixed bag!” –

A Word From Captain Rob about Deep Sea Fishing
“Trolling for big game can be boring until the big fish start biting… and it doesn’t always happen fast. We have to troll if you want a shot at the big game.
We put our tried and true lures out, cover the water and wait. It’s important to remember it’s called fishing for a reason (it’s not called catching) because there are rare days where the fish move elsewhere. Again, in this area we are lucky and days with only a few fish caught are rare.
But we put the hustle in and bring live bait on the trip so that we have the option of targeting different choices of fish if Trolling is not effective. Not all companies do this. Most just troll.
After trolling the Captain has to switch out tackle so he can get set up to live bait fishing. This is a completely different form of fishing, and it requires a different skill set. This may not seem like hustling to some, but doing the right things to get ready for live bait fishing can be tedious.
I hope this helps people understand offshore fishing a little better. “ – Robert R, Owner at Mixed Bag Sportfishing – Offshore Adventures
